We are excited to spotlight a new donor to Texans Care for Children: Dorinda Gborie-Minor, a LMSW at Texas Children's Hospital.
This is the first in a new series spotlighting Texans who have made donations to Texans Care for Children to help us drive policy change to improve the lives of Texas children today for a stronger Texas tomorrow.
We couldn’t do what we do without the financial support of donors like Dorinda. We appreciate her support and the support of so many others who have contributed to our work.
We recently interviewed Dorinda to learn a little bit more about her, the work she does for Texas children, what motivates her, and why she decided to support Texans Care for Children. This is what she had to say:
Dorinda Gborie-Minor
Tell us a little about yourself. What do you do for a living?
I am a graduate of the University of Florida and Our Lady of the Lake University. I am a professional Licensed Master Social Worker and I am completing my clinical hours to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
In my work as a Social Worker at Texas Children’s Hospital, it is a privilege to provide support, resources, and outstanding care through the interactions and psychosocial assessments of clients.
My day to day life is filled with joy, laughter, unpleasant moments, resistance, and compliance, but in all, it is important that I make an impact and the clients and their families have positive results despite the circumstances.
How did you hear about Texans Care for Children and what is it that prompted you to take the next step and donate to our work?
I heard about Texans Care for Children while working in the education system as a Student Support Manager/LMSW.
I was prompted to donate because Texans Care for Children focuses on the importance of early education and ensuring that students have the resources and funding to succeed in school. Texans Care for Children is at the forefront of these issues, speaking to legislators and political leaders to make sure Texas invests in the lives of future generations.
What is it that drew you to the social work field and Texas Children's Hospital?
I was called to the helping field. People have invested in my own life, and God has allowed me to use his gift to uplift people, provide support, and directions. I am a Social Worker because it allows me to assess my clients’ lives and provide the necessary tools to allow them to live a successful, independent life.
Passion is what drew me to Texas Children’s Hospital, the passion to serve the next generation and their families and provide the best care. Medically fragile kids encounter so much in their daily lives. Many may have depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems. It is my responsibility to provide ways to live a better and fulfilling life.
What advice do you have for us at Texans Care for Children and our supporters across the state? How can we continue to best serve our communities as a whole?
As an LMSW and a concerned Texas citizen, my advice is to never forget the purpose of this work. It can be a frustrating work at times, but even in those disappointing moments, there is hope — hope for a better generation of children to be educated, have options, and be equipped to give back to the community.
Texans Care for Children, Texas Children’s Hospital, and so many of the other organizations that my family and I assist are making a difference in the lives of future generations. We must never forget to invest in today to have a better tomorrow.
We can also continue to better serve our community as a whole by providing culturally competent services to people of every race, gender, culture, sexual orientation, and so on. Everyone has needs. It is our responsibility to serve wholeheartedly and compassionately, with empathy and our whole self, and leave out our biases.
Outside of children and family issues, what are you most passionate about? Any secret skills or talents?
I am passionate about my family, my husband, fishing, going to church, serving at my church, and traveling.
